Traveling exposes students to new places and cultures. It changes how they look at the world, as well as challenges their own cultural values and biases. It can also impact their education and career direction, while building their confidence to expand the world they grew up in.
A new scholarship, launched by Ashley and Bradley Becnel, will make travel available to students of all ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in the River Parishes. It will provide up to $5,000 to pay for a summer learning program and some travel related expenses. Students will join a reputable company specializing in high school and college travel programs throughout the world. One student will receive the scholarship each year, with the potential for additional students based on available funding.
“It offers a chance for students to explore the world and begin seeing it in a new light,” said Ashley Becnel. “Programs will include language classes, cultural immersion, leadership training, sightseeing, volunteering and more.”
Four travel and cultural immersion pro- grams have been pre- selected for the 2020/2021 scholarship, but Ashley and Bradley will work closely with the winner on the final selection and will assist in all related travel planning activities.
“We were both fortunate to build careers that allowed us to travel the country and the world,” added Bradley Becnel. “As someone who grew up in LaPlace, I wanted to open up that door for someone else in the area.”
